About Camp Mathews

Camp Mathews opened in 1922 on the shores of Lake Kelcema as Camp Kelcema.
In 1943, the name was changed to Camp Mathews in recognition of Capt. R. G. Mathews, retiring Scout Executive for the Everett Council.

The camp was located in the north Cascade mountain range between Darrington and Granite Falls, WA
off of the Mountain Loop Highway. The 4 acre property was leased from the US Forest Service.

The remote location was difficult to reach and required pack mules to transfer supplies.
For this reason, the Evergreen Area Council replaced this property with Camp Sevenich in 1948.

During the years of operation, Camp Kelcema and Camp Mathews served the Everett and Evergreen Area Councils.
